Tree Over A Wall
Darkened Courtyard
Parking Lot Dumpsters
The first picture seen here was not actually the first picture taken. The first picture taken was the parking lot one, but since that turned out so well, if not a bit blurry, I elected to put that at the end. This final photograph was originally intended - and I quote - to be a "grungy hipster picture of a dumpster" and while it certainly works in this capacity, it also works as what it really is - a lucky shot with some really great lighting. That day, it was really sunny and the shutter only needed to be open for 10 seconds. It was, however, the first shot that my partner and I took, and the box that served as our camera was shaken slightly in our attempts to keep it still. The second picture we took, Tree Over A Wall, was taken the next day and it was raining and very cloudy that day. We'd had good luck the previous day, but with this one, we kept the shutter open for too long - 45 seconds. It was a bit of a let-down from what we'd gotten at first, but a few days later, there was better lighting - not as good as that first day, but better than what gave us the black picture with a white corner. We went back to the site where we took the picture you see at the top and this time left the shutter open for only 20 seconds. The result was a good photo that, with a little more trial-and-error might have been better.
Parking Lot Dumpsters is, to me, the best of the three, but I feel proudest of Darkened Courtyard because with the first two, we learned something - how not to shake the camera and how long to leave the shutter open - and with the third one we applied what we learned and ended up with something that I'm surprised with how much I like.
And so I give to you, three pictures taken from a shoe-box that once held my dad's seriously large size 13 shoes.
